More on the 1951 Edition

The plates in the original 1951 edition of Thomas Balston's English Wood-Engraving 1900-1950 were printed using electrotypes (metal duplicates) made from the original wood blocks, not from the wood blocks themselves. This was a common commercial practice for book illustration at the time.
The book was printed by the Shenval Press. The use of electrotypes allowed the images to be printed simultaneously with the letterpress type, which was standard for commercial book production in the mid-20th century.
