Cheltenham Racecourse, in the nearby village of Prestbury, is the home of National Hunt or Jumps Racing in the United Kingdom. Meetings are hosted between October and April and the main meeting is always held in March and is known as The Cheltenham Festival Meeting and includes the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Munnings' painting captures the whole essence of the paddock before a race, as it used to be in the middle of the 20th Century. The Festival features a cast of the best horses, jockeys and trainers and there is an average audience each year of some 220,000 people, who are all determined to have the time of their lives. There is a strong Irish influence at The Cheltenham Festival and one of the days often coincides with St. Patrick's Day.
For anyone who appreciates top class sport and the opportunity to share a special experience with like minded people, it is a true joy. The Course is owned by The Jockey Club and the setting is truly beautiful, with the hills behind.
